BABYMETAL has announced NFT trading cards to be available for 72 hours starting May 6th at 11 AM EST (May 7th at 12 AM JST) at babymetal.cards. The release, limited to 1000 packs, each with ten trading cards (each card is 1 of 1000), represents all ten episodes of the Metal Resistance – the ten chapters of the band that have unfolded since their inception a decade ago.

Each pack of cards will be $100 USD and will come with an exclusive gold colored vinyl of the 10 BABYMETAL YEARS LP, available only with these packs.

Due to the limited nature of this release, orders will be limited to two per customer.

NFT Cards

I will not pretend to be able to explain what an NFT is, so here is an article from BBC.

The cards will be issued in NFT (non-fungible token) format, on the WAX blockchain. Purchasers will need to create a WAX wallet to complete purchase, with the transaction being made via credit card or PayPal.

The “10 BABYMETAL YEARS” commemorative NFTs are unique, certified authentic, and tradable on a WAX blockchain marketplace like Atomic Hub. This will allow you to buy, sell and trade them. Keep your set intact, or stock up on your favorites. The choice is yours.

The cards will be minted on MAY 10 and distributed on MAY 11 at 10AM PST. Cards will be minted based on order date and time. The first person to order gets the #1 mint! Once distributed, your BABYMETAL cards will appear in the NFTs section of your WAX wallet.

“10 BABYMETAL YEARS” Gold Vinyl

An exclusive limited-edition pressing of the “10 BABYMETAL YEARS” LP will be included with the purchase of each pack, issued on limited-edition Gold vinyl. The Gold vinyl is exclusive to the NFT bundle and is not available separately. It is expected to be released late July, 2021.

Fan Reaction

The reception was less than warming, to say the least. Comments on the posts ranged from disappointment to downright anger. The main concerns appear to be claims of high energy usage as well as the overall “point” to it.

Debates did pop up, discussing how high the energy usage really is, and if it’s as bad as pointed out. There were also articles from various publications, such as Metal Hammer and Consequence of Sound.

On the FAQ they state:

The Wax blockchain is known as a proof-of-stake blockchain, which uses considerably less energy than other proof-of-work methods, making Wax more than 100,000x more efficient.

This means that each transaction only uses about 0.00001% of the energy used for a similar transaction on Ethereum.

What it did seem most fans could agree on, even those that think it isn’t as bad as shipping physical merch, is that it’s dumb. Though of course, there are people that disagree with that as well.

One thing that did not seem to come up in any conversation is the fact that they appear to be preparing more (though it could be an automated thing):
